What is ChatGPT, in plain English
The short answer: ChatGPT is an AI assistant you can chat with. You type a question or a request, and it writes back in everyday language. It is made by a company called OpenAI, and you can start using it for free. Think of it as a quick, well-read helper. It is useful, but it is not always right, so it works best when you stay in charge.
What it can help with
Most people start with simple, everyday things:
- Explaining. "What does this word mean?" or "Explain this like I'm new to it."
- Writing. A thank-you note, a polite email, or a clearer way to say something.
- Planning. A weekly menu, a packing list, or ideas for a birthday party.
- Learning. Getting a topic explained step by step, with as many follow-up questions as you like.
What it is not
- It is not a person. It is a computer program that is very good with words.
- It is not a doctor, lawyer, or financial advisor. It can help you understand a topic, but it should not make big decisions for you.
- It is not always correct. OpenAI says plainly that ChatGPT can produce wrong or misleading answers, and it recommends treating what it writes as a first draft rather than a final source.
Try it, step by step
- Open it the safe way. Type chatgpt.com into your web browser yourself, or install the official ChatGPT app for iPhone or Android. Check that the app is made by OpenAI, because lookalike apps exist.
- Sign up if it asks. In some places you can try ChatGPT without an account. Where an account is needed, a free one is fine. Use a strong password, ideally from a password manager.
- Type in the message box at the bottom of the screen and press send. Write the way you would talk to a helpful neighbor. No special wording is needed.
- Ask follow-up questions. ChatGPT remembers what was said earlier in the same chat. If an answer is too long or confusing, just say so: "Can you make that simpler?"
- Start fresh when you want. Choose New chat to begin a new topic.
- Check anything important. For health, money, or legal questions, confirm with a trusted source or a professional.
"I'm new to AI. In simple words, what can you help me with? Please give me three easy things I could try today."
Keep it safe
- Don't type in private numbers. That means Social Security numbers, bank or card numbers, and passwords. You never need to share these to get help.
- Use the official site or app. If something asks for payment before you have even started, stop and double-check that you are in the real ChatGPT.
- Know the free plan is real. ChatGPT has a free plan with basic limits, and those limits can change over time. Paid plans are optional. If you see an upgrade offer, read the plan and the price before you confirm anything.
- Choose your privacy setting. In Settings, open Data controls and look for Improve the model for everyone. When it is turned off, your new conversations are not used to train OpenAI's models. Turning it off does not delete the chats you have already saved.
- Remember that AI is also used by scammers. Our guide on how to spot an AI voice scam is a good companion to this one.
Quick questions
Is it really free? You can start for free. The free plan has limits, and optional paid plans offer more.
Can it look things up online? It can search the web and show its sources when it needs current information. Open those sources when the answer matters.
Will it always be right? No. That is the most important thing to know, and the reason to stay in charge.
